Process service is one of the most straightforward parts of a legal matter on paper — deliver the papers to the right person, document the attempt, and move on. In practice, it's one of the parts that goes sideways most often when you hand it to someone without local presence.

South Jersey Professional Solutions provides process service across Salem, Cumberland, and Gloucester Counties, with documented attempts, business and workplace service, rush and same-day service, and affidavit or proof-of-service support. This post explains how the service works, what we charge, and why local presence matters for it.

What process service is

Process service is the formal delivery of legal documents — a summons, a complaint, a subpoena, a notice, a motion — to a person or entity who is required to receive them. It's a required step in most legal proceedings, and it has to be done correctly for the matter to move forward.

A proper service attempt isn't just "I dropped the papers off." It's a documented attempt — who was served, when, where, how, and by whom — that can be supported if the service is ever challenged.

What we offer

Standard local attempt

A standard local attempt runs $75. This is our baseline service — a documented attempt to serve the addressed person or party at the specified location in our service area. We make the attempt, document what happened, and provide the supporting record.

Additional attempts

When the first attempt doesn't result in service — the person wasn't there, the address was wrong, the party refused — an additional attempt runs $45. Multiple attempts are common, especially when a party is avoiding service or the address needs to be confirmed.

Business and workplace service

Service at a business or workplace runs $95. Business and workplace service has its own considerations — who is authorized to receive service at the location, what hours the business is open, whether the appropriate person is present, and how the attempt should be documented for a commercial address.

Rush and same-day service

When a matter needs service quickly — same-day or rush — the service runs $125. Rush and same-day requests require availability, and they're not always possible on every address or every day. When they are, we prioritize them and document them accordingly.

Affidavit or proof-of-service support

After service is completed, an affidavit or proof of service may be needed to document the attempt for the court or the attorney's files. Our affidavit or proof-of-service support runs $35. This is the paperwork that supports the service record — the document that says who was served, when, where, and how.

Multi-address or extended service

When a matter involves multiple addresses, multiple parties, or an extended service effort over time, we quote it directly. Multi-address and extended service efforts vary by the number of addresses, the number of attempts, the geography, and the timeline.

What a documented service attempt includes

When we complete a service attempt, the record generally includes:

  • The address or location where the attempt was made
  • The date and time of the attempt
  • Who was present and who was served, if anyone
  • What happened during the attempt — served, not present, refused, address issue, or other outcome
  • The method of service, where applicable
  • The identity of the server
  • Any supporting documentation — photos, notes, business authorization records, where appropriate

That record is what supports the service if it's ever questioned. It's also what the supervising attorney needs to confirm the service was done correctly.

Why local presence matters for process service

Process service is one of those tasks that looks simple until you have to do it in a specific county, on a specific street, at a specific time, for a specific person. Then the local details matter a lot.

Address accuracy

Addresses in South Jersey can be confusing — rural routes, businesses with multiple entrances, residences that share addresses with neighboring properties, locations that are easy to get wrong if you're working from a stale or incomplete address. A local provider who knows the area is less likely to show up at the wrong door.

Timing

When is the business open? When is the person likely to be home? What are the hours of the county offices if you need to verify something? A local provider with local knowledge can time attempts better than someone working from a spreadsheet and a time zone they're not in.

Business and workplace service

Business and workplace service has its own rules and practicalities — who can accept service at a business, what the business's hours are, whether the right person is likely to be on site. A local provider who has done business service in the area before has a better sense of what to expect.

Access and logistics

Some addresses are hard to reach — gated communities, businesses in industrial parks with restricted access, rural properties with long driveways, buildings with security procedures. Local knowledge helps here too. If we know an address is a problem in advance, we can plan for it rather than arriving and finding we can't get in.

Documentation and record-keeping

When service is done locally, by someone who knows the area and the process, the documentation tends to be cleaner. The record is better when the server knows what to document, how to document it, and what the attorney and the court will want to see later.

When process service goes sideways

The most common reasons a service attempt doesn't produce service on the first try:

  • The person isn't at the address when the server arrives
  • The address is wrong or incomplete
  • The person is avoiding service
  • The business is closed, or the right person isn't on site
  • Access is restricted — gated, secured, or otherwise difficult to reach
  • The party refuses to accept service

When any of these happen, the response is usually an additional attempt — at a different time, a different approach, or a confirmed address. That's why additional attempts are priced separately at $45, and why multi-address matters are quoted directly.

How the service process works with us

  1. The attorney provides the matter details. The address or addresses, the documents to be served, any special instructions, and the supervising attorney's direction for the service.
  2. We confirm the scope and the fee. For a standard single-address attempt, that's the standard fee. For multi-address, rush, or extended service, we quote it directly.
  3. We make the attempt. We go to the address, attempt service according to the direction, and document what happens.
  4. We report back. We give the attorney the service record — served, not served, or partial — with the documentation that supports it.
  5. If service wasn't completed, we plan the next step. An additional attempt, a confirmed address, a different time, or a different approach — whatever the supervising attorney directs.

The service runs under the supervising attorney's direction throughout. We don't make service decisions on our own — we execute the direction and document the outcome.

What we don't do

Process service with South Jersey Professional Solutions doesn't include:

  • Legal advice about whether service was proper or what the legal effect of a service attempt is
  • Determining the correct method of service for a particular matter — that's the supervising attorney's call
  • Serving papers outside our service area without a direct arrangement
  • Any representation of a party in a legal proceeding

We serve papers and document the attempt. The legal questions around service — whether it was sufficient, whether a particular method was correct, what the next step should be — those go through the supervising attorney.

The bottom line

Process service is one of those tasks that's easy to underestimate until it's the thing holding up a matter. A documented service attempt, done locally, by someone who knows South Jersey and shows up when they said they would, is worth more than a cheap service that sends someone without local knowledge to the wrong address on the wrong day.
